The clash of civilizations
    2023-11-07  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

Alice Huang, G11, RDF International School

These days the whole world is concerned with the escalating Israeli-Palestinian conflict. It is hard to believe that such a highly intensive confrontation that has caused thousands of deaths and tremendous humanitarian catastrophes could happen in this century where humankind has reached its highest level of civilization. Why? Is there a way out?

Recently I read the book titled “The Clash of Civilizations” by American politician Samuel Huntington. According to the book, the long-lasting conflicts between Israelis and Palestinians could be regarded as the clash of two civilizations with different religions, histories and cultures. For thousands of years, people of the two religions have experienced continuous confrontations. From Huntington’s perspective, the differences in religions and cultures are the main drive behind the clash. Although the idea is a bit elusive to grasp, it seems that there is no better explanation.

In the book, Huntington also provides some inspiration for resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Huntington believes that conflicts among civilizations are fundamental conflicts that will not disappear over time, and can only be resolved through dialogue and communication.

Therefore, the key to resolving the conflict lies in open-minded dialogue and exchange. Resolving differences between the two sides through respect, understanding and inclusiveness could achieve long-term peace between the two civilizations.

In short, Huntington’s theory emphasizes that differences between civilizations are the main cause of conflicts, and it also provides ideas for resolving conflicts between civilizations.

This proposal has been reiterated and put into action by the Chinese government. As the world can see, China has maintained friendly and cooperative relationships with other countries for many years.

We hope the conflicts among all religions and nations will end someday and all people on this planet can enjoy peace.
