A PROMINENT sign that displays CYG Sunri Co. Ltd.’s mission and hangs at the company’s headquarters exhibition hall in Nanshan District caught the attention of a delegation of journalists during a tour in October. The sign reads “For a safer and easier use of energy.”

The delegation was presented an opportunity to learn more about CYG Sunri, who strives to become a world-class provider of intelligent and digital technologies for industrial and power systems.

Established in 1994, CYG Sunri Co. Ltd. has emerged as a global leader in specializing in power system automation and digital transformation.

According to Qiang Wei, general manager of CYG Sunri, the company has established a comprehensive presence in the electric power field, with its business and technologies covering power generation, transmission, transformation, distribution, and usage.

Its power protection and control products have been successfully implemented in over 30,000 electrical substations across China, ensuring approximately 10% of the nation’s electricity consumption.

CYG Sunri’s reputation has extended beyond China, with operations now spanning 80 countries and regions. Through a steadfast commitment to self-innovation, the company has acquired core technologies and secured more than 350 patents and software copyrights. As one of the first domestic manufacturers of relay protection equipment, it has actively participated in the establishment of over 160 national and industry standards.

Origins in power tech

CYG Sunri initially made its mark in the industry with its relay protection devices, designed to prevent equipment damage and address safety concerns. The company’s BP series microprocessor-based busbar protection system has earned approval from the Ministry of Electric Power, effectively filling a gap in this area in China.

Over the past few decades, CYG Sunri has continually increased investment in research and development, consistently enhancing its technologies and driving industry advancement.

With close to 2,000 employees, approximately 70% of whom hold technology-related positions, CYG Sunri remains committed to pushing forward safer and more efficient power usage through their exceptional technologies, according to Qiang.

Independent supplies

CYG Sunri has successfully overcome a challenging journey towards achieving independent component supplies.

Yu Weiguo, the company’s deputy chief engineer, disclosed to the media that in 2019, the company depended on imported components for its products, with imported parts accounting for 98% of the total.

However, by 2021, the delivery period for MCU chips had extended from six to eight weeks to an astonishing two years, accompanied by a steep price surge from 18 yuan (US$2.47) to over 500 yuan. This substantial cost escalation impelled CYG Sunri to re-evaluate its technological research, ultimately leading to the attainment of reliable independent component supplies.

Venturing into

overseas markets

CYG Sunri is committed to exploring and expanding into overseas markets. Feng Liang, deputy general manager, said the company’s business in Southeast Asia now accounts for 60% of its total overseas market share.

Seizing the opportunities presented by the Belt and Road Initiative, CYG Sunri has actively collaborated with companies in participating countries while also aiming to broaden its reach to the other parts of the world, according to him.

Currently, CYG Sunri’s devices and services are utilized in various projects, including Thailand’s first intelligent transformer substation in Nongki, electricity distribution ventures in Ethiopia, and an electricity transmission project in Laos, as well as other related projects in Angola and Indonesia.
