Part-time jobs for needy students
    2023-11-27  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

RECENT posts in Zhongshan University’s online forum have sparked controversy after revealing that a financially struggling student was using a full set of Apple products and buying expensive concert tickets. In response, the university decided to discontinue the grants the student was receiving.

Examining the existing student aid system reveals several flaws. Linking financial aid to students’ living conditions and academic performance heightens their mental stress. Students facing economic challenges and with relatively lower academic achievements find themselves under dual pressure. Moreover, by predominantly focusing on the family’s economic status and giving out grants on that basis, the authorities discourage the individual efforts of college students, who could have taken responsibility and found ways to improve their lives. In fact, some students from financially disadvantaged backgrounds have managed to overcome obstacles and achieve financial independence through part-time work or business activities. Financial aid should only be provided when students are unable to earn incomes through their own work to cover living expenses.

The procedure for distributing student aid also requires improvement. Currently, higher education institutions mainly use a competitive evaluation approach to select and provide financial aid to the most financially challenged students. This compromises students’ privacy and fosters a sense of rivalry among them. It’s better if the students themselves are allowed to initiate the application process; the funding committee then needs to verify through confidential investigations and allocate aid based on urgency.

Thorough tracking and investigation must be conducted to ensure that the aid genuinely goes to students in need. It is important to note that financial aid is different from student loans and does not require repayment.

Part-time work-study programs can effectively address the financial difficulties faced by college students. Offering part-time work opportunities not only allows them to earn income and cover their living expenses, but cultivates a strong work ethic and independence as well.

To ensure the integrity of student aid, education authorities can establish student aid contracts mandating that students truthfully declare their personal incomes. In cases of false declarations or if a student has found other means to improve their financial situations, the aid can be terminated prematurely in accordance with the terms of the contract. This would help maintain transparency and accountability within the system.

By addressing the flaws in the subsidy system and promoting part-time work opportunities, colleges can better support needy students. It is essential to empower students to take responsibility for their own lives while ensuring that financial aid reaches those truly in need.
