Claudia Yang brings Maritime Silk Road legend to concert
    2023-11-27  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

UNDER the baton of Spanish conductor José María Moreno, the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra (SZSO) will perform the works of Manuel de Falla, the most distinguished Spanish composer of the early 20th century as well as “The Legend of Maritime Silk Road,” a piano concerto written by British pianist and composer John Lenehan.

Claudia Yang, who premiered the latter piece alongside the China National Symphony Orchestra in Hebei Province in July, will be the soloist.

Commissioned by the Silk Road International Arts Center, Lenehan’s five-movement piece lasts 28 minutes and pays tribute to the friendship between China and the Southeast Asian countries.

Weaving folksongs from 11 nations such as China, Singapore, Vietnam, Cambodia and Malaysia into its enchanting melodies, the piece aspires to depict the landscapes of those nations as well as their people’s effort to build a prosperous future together with their neighbors.

Yang was born in Malaysia into a family with Chinese origin. She took her first piano lessons at 5. Tutored by Dianko Iliew, Paul Badura-Skoda and Ludwig Hoffmann, she graduated from the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna with top honors in 1997. She has collaborated with the London Symphony Orchestra (LSO), the Vienna Chamber Orchestra, Moscow State Symphony Orchestra, and the China National Symphony among others, as a soloist and at leading music festivals around the world. In 2014, she collaborated with Gyula Fekete of the Franz Liszt Academy of Music to compose the piano concerto “Dream of the Red Chamber,” which was subsequently recorded with the LSO conducted by Tang Muhai.

Friday’s program will also include excerpts from Falla’s “El amor brujo” (“Love, the Magician”), his “El sombrero de trespicos, Suites No. 1 and No. 2” (“The Three-cornered Hat”) and “La vida breve, Interlude and Dance” (“The Brief Life”).

All these works, deeply rooted in Spanish folk music traditions, established Falla internationally as a leading composer. The “El sombrero de trespicos Suites,” evoking the Andalusian atmosphere through erotic and suggestive orchestration, often leaves the audience in awe at concerts.

One of the most passionate, energetic and versatile Spanish conductors of his generation, Moreno is music and artist director of the Malaga Philharmonic Orchestra in Spain. With a rich repertoire conducting operas, ballets and concerts, he has guest-conducted such orchestras as the Berlin Symphony Orchestra and Brandenburg Symphony Orchestra.

Lenehan has written and arranged for a long list of soloists and orchestras including Nigel Kennedy, Nicola Benedetti, and Wang Yuja, the BBC Concert Orchestra and the Hong Kong Philharmonic.
