Top 10 tech events for 2023

AS 2023 is coming to an end, the 10 most impactful events in Shenzhen’s science and technology sector have been selected. These events demonstrate Shenzhen’s resilience and vitality in pursuing high-quality growth, according to Shenzhen Economic Daily.

1. SZ Medical Academy of Research and Translation

The Shenzhen Medical Academy of Research and Translation (SMART) was officially inaugurated in Guangming District on Nov. 21. World-renowned structural biologist Yan Ning serves as the founding president of the academy, a high-level academic research institute integrating comprehensive medical research, talent cultivation, and scientific achievement transformation.

2. Four new academicians

Four scientists from Shenzhen, namely Huang Sanwen, Yan Ning, Zheng Hairong, and Li Qingquan, were on the list of newly elected members to the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering published Nov. 22.

3. Top physics prize

Xue Qikun, an academician with the Chinese Academy of Sciences, professor at Tsinghua University, and president of Shenzhen’s Southern University of Science and Technology, was awarded the 2024 Oliver E. Buckley Condensed Matter Physics Prize, an international award that recognizes outstanding contributions to condensed matter physics.

4. 5G-Advanced era

After realizing full 5G network coverage in 2020, Shenzhen announced on May 10 its commitment to exploring the application of 5G-Advanced technology.

5. Pioneer city in AI

In May, the city government released a document outlining Shenzhen’s ambition to become a global pioneer city in AI, aiming to empower high-quality development.

6. City of Superchargers

Capitalizing on the “new infrastructure rush,” Shenzhen launched an initiative to build a “City of Superchargers” at the 2023 International Digital Energy Expo on June 29.

7. SZ-made ECMO

The first domestically made extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) was approved for use by China’s top drug regulator in January. Shenzhen companies participated in ECMO’s research and manufacturing.

8. Huawei Mate 60

On Aug. 29, Huawei surprised the world with an unadvertised announcement — the launch of its latest high-end smartphone, the Mate 60 Pro, which triggered an instant sensation.

9. BYD rolls off 6 millionth NEV

BYD, a global leader in new energy vehicles (NEVs) and power batteries, achieved a historic milestone as its 6 millionth new energy vehicle rolled off the production line at the Zhengzhou factory Nov. 24.

10. Most ‘beautiful’ sci-tech workers

On May 30, the seventh National Science and Technology Workers Day, 10 individuals were honored as the “Most Beautiful Science and Technology Workers” in Shenzhen. (Zhang Yu)
