THE beloved Shenzhen Art Film Screening project has entered its second year, continuing to delight movie enthusiasts with a carefully curated selection of both new releases and timeless classics. This month, audience members can watch Luc Besson’s “Dogman,” as well as other award-winning films.

Besson’s “Dogman” delves into the narrative of a youth battered by life’s challenges, who discovers solace through his affection for dogs. Introduced in China last month, the film resonates with audience members through its poignant exploration of resilience in the face of life’s unpredictability.

Among the new releases, the Taiwanese film “Han Dan” stands out as a must-watch. Starring Cheng Jen-shuo and George Hu, the movie revolves around two young men vying for the affections of the same woman, culminating in a tense confrontation during the Bombing of Master Han Dan, a unique tradition during the Lantern Festival in Taitung. The film is acclaimed for its meticulous depiction of youth’s life in Taiwan, the exceptional performances of the lead actors, and an authentic portrayal of traditional Chinese folk customs.

Local audience members can also revisit several popular flicks, including “Soul Mate,” “The Crossing,” “B for Busy” and “Shadow,” all of which garnered rave reviews during their debut screenings.

“The Crossing” follows a teenage girl studying in Hong Kong and residing in Shenzhen, who employs her student status to smuggle cellphones from Hong Kong into the mainland. Renowned for its fresh take on the coming-of-age theme, unique Shenzhen and Hong Kong setting, as well as its fluent storytelling and cinematography, the film will continue to enrapture audiences.

“B for Busy” weaves the tale of a divorced Shanghai man entangled in complex relationships with his ex-wife, a divorced woman and a student. With its engaging plotlines, this romantic comedy delves into the themes of love, relationships and friendships among middle-aged Chinese people.

Hosted by the Publicity Department of the Shenzhen Municipal Committee of the CPC, the monthly Shenzhen Art Film Screening project is an open invitation for moviegoers to appreciate art films at affordable prices. Attendees can engage in discussions with outstanding filmmakers during certain events. Since its inception in January 2023, the project has presented more than 117 acclaimed Chinese and foreign art films.
