MANY expats living and working in Hong Kong were captivated by Shenzhen’s original dance drama “Wing Chun” and highly recommend the drama after watching the performance.

The dance drama premiered in Hong Kong from Thursday to yesterday with five performances, presenting a cultural feast for Hong Kong audiences.

“I was very happily surprised to see so many aspects of Hong Kong culture so accurately represented and the story of Yip Man’s ascension as a very well-respected martial arts artist in Hong Kong,” an expat who identified himself as Patrick, a Canadian who has been living in Hong Kong for many years, told Shenzhen Daily.

“It was a really, really great performance and I really recommend anyone who has the chance to see it while they still can,” he said, adding that the combination of dance and martial arts makes the performance entertaining and a lot more alive.

Patrick said he was glad to see that such a high-quality production comes from Shenzhen. “To see this kind of performance coming out of Shenzhen, I think it really raises the curtain on Shenzhen becoming known more for its culture and its arts instead of just for its location or its manufacturing.”

Martin Schwab, CEO of CKW, a leading Swiss provider of integrated energy and building technology solutions, said the combination of dance and martial arts is extremely fascinating.

“I really love it. I can recommend it to everybody,” Schwab said with a smile.

According to him, he would love to see “Wing Chun” become a fixture in Shenzhen theaters, just like many long-running and famous shows can be found in New York’s Broadway and London’s West End.

“I would love it if that happens,” Schwab said. “I would like to welcome it to Switzerland if possible.”

Alla Semiletova, a business consultant with Ernst & Young, a multinational professional services provider, said she was impressed by how the story is told and the messages it conveys.

“We face a lot of challenges nowadays and it’s good to see some inspiration about pursuing your dream, being persistent and sticking to it, and then achieving success,” she said. “The dance is really beautiful, and the combination of contemporary dance and martial arts is really creative. I really enjoyed it. I could imagine this being well appreciated in Europe.”
