Dance drama partners with lifestyle brand, film star
    2024-01-15  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

THE Shenzhen dance drama “Wing Chun” has joined forces with the renowned lifestyle brand lululemon to create a captivating short film titled “Spring, Wing Chun,” showcasing the allure of traditional Chinese culture through a body language rich in oriental aesthetics.

The themed short film, integrating martial arts and dance, has gained widespread attention on social media platforms.

Featuring Michelle Yeoh, the first Asian woman to win an Oscar for lead actress, and eight dancers from “Wing Chun,” the collaborative short film and its posters are being showcased in 680 lululemon stores worldwide, further enhancing the global influence of the dance drama by blending its core elements with international fashion.

Lululemon, which boasts over 10 stores in Shenzhen, has followed up its online promotion with extensive offline advertising efforts. In one store at Coastal City shopping mall in Nanshan District, the short film is prominently displayed on a large screen behind the cashier counter.

Shoppers are expressing their enthusiasm, with one mentioning her intention to purchase a set of clothes from the limited edition series, describing them as “festive.”

“I felt proud when watching the dance drama, which effectively embodies the spirit of Shenzhen residents pursuing dreams,” a shopper surnamed Wang said. “The colors of this series are festive. I will get a set, hoping for a good start in 2024.”

Xie Shuling, vice president of brand marketing for lululemon in China, said they felt fortunate to have the opportunity to utilize “Wing Chun” as a medium for integrating martial arts and dance while bridging the gap between tradition and modernity.

“Chinese kung fu emphasizes self-cultivation, both internally and externally. ‘Wing Chun,’ in particular, encapsulates the dynamic practice of ‘spirit, energy, and vitality,’ symbolizing the pursuit of the unity of body and mind. This resonates perfectly with our philosophy of being in a good state,” Xie said.

Yeoh, in an interview, commended the powerful dance troupe of “Wing Chun” and expressed her honor in collaborating with them. She highlighted the harmonious fusion of strength and softness, and of movement and stillness in the dance drama, emphasizing the profound impression it left on her.

“Wing Chun” has been on a tour across China since March 2023 and made its overseas debut in Singapore in September last year. With 137 performances in 34 cities and global acclaim, the dance drama continues to captivate audiences worldwide.

Following its premiere in Hong Kong earlier this month, the cast members returned to Shenzhen and performed five shows at Shenzhen Grand Theater as a gesture of gratitude to the local residents.  (SD News)
