SHENZHEN’S recent mandate requiring daily physical education (PE) lessons for all first- to ninth-graders starting Jan. 1 presents a great opportunity to ignite students’ interest in exercise and improve their overall wellbeing.

Rising concerns about student health, including obesity, nearsightedness and mental health necessitate this proactive approach. Daily PE lessons offer opportunities for outdoor exercise, which may improve students’ fitness levels and even academic performance.

More than two years into the initiative to reduce academic learning burdens on students during the compulsory education stage, students do have more time for sports, which can promote holistic growth in the young.

While the benefits of increased PE sessions are evident, potential obstacles must be acknowledged. Diversifying lesson content to maintain student interest is crucial. Utilizing external sports facilities can provide exposure to a wider range of activities. Then, schools need to better train their teachers or even hire more staff to provide quality PE lessons to students.

Moreover, ensuring the safety and quality of sports facilities is paramount. Regular inspections and potential upgrades are necessary to mitigate risks and maintain a safe exercise environment.
