THE employed population in Shenzhen reached 12.559 million people in 2023, with an additional 196,600 people finding jobs, according to data released by the Shenzhen Municipal Human Resources and Social Security Bureau on Sunday.

The city’s social security system allocated 1.123 billion yuan (US$158 million) in subsidies for entrepreneurship and employment initiatives throughout 2023.

Shenzhen witnessed an increase in talent, with 156,700 newcomers settling in the city in 2023.

In 2024, the bureau aims to increase urban employment for 185,000 people and create at least 30,000 new employment opportunities, according to the bureau.

To achieve this, the city’s Public Employment Service Center, operating under the bureau, plans to organize at least 300 job fairs in the first four months of this year.

A recent survey conducted by the center indicated that after the Spring Festival holiday, software and internet companies, as well as major industrial projects, may face a shortage of approximately 80,000 skilled workers.
