THE Nine-Dragon Wall in Beijing’s Beihai Park is a famous cultural and historical landmark, featuring elaborately carved dragons in a variety of colors, each capturing a distinctive pose and expression. As the Year of the Dragon begins, Shenzheners can admire a replica of this grand wall at an exhibition at Bao’an 1990.

The original 27-meter-long Nine-Dragon Wall, built in 1756 with colored glazed bricks, is renowned for its intricate and vibrant artwork, showcasing traditional Chinese dragon motifs and decorative elements. Each dragon is depicted with remarkable details, serving as a testament to the skill and craftsmanship of traditional Chinese artisans. In traditional Chinese culture, dragons symbolize power, strength, and good fortune. As such, the wall holds not only aesthetic value but also cultural and symbolic importance.

At the Bao’an exhibition, visitors can also admire a 3.26-meter-long colored enamel relief featuring a traditional Chinese folklore image of two dragons playing with a pearl. The double-sided work presents four exquisite dragons playing through the clouds, with vivid expressions and vibrant movements.

The exhibition focuses on the dragon’s image and cultural significance, exploring its origins and evolution, as well as its iconic presence in folk customs, through the display of jade, bronzeware, pottery, porcelain, goldware, silverware, rubbings, stamps, and coins, providing a comprehensive look at the wide-ranging impact of this mythical creature.
