NANSHAN District launched its drone delivery service for blood, dubbed “airborne blood delivery,” during a ceremony at the Huazhong University of Science and Technology Union Shenzhen Hospital, also known as Nanshan Hospital, on Friday.

The initiative saw blood transported from the Shenzhen Blood Center to the hospital in just 15 minutes, a stark contrast to the typical 90-minute round-trip ground transportation time between the two locations.

According to Hu Fenglan, director of the hospital’s blood transfusion department, the drone service improves medical treatment efficiency and ensures a reliable blood supply during emergencies.

Blood delivery via drones exemplifies one of the medical service application scenarios in Nanshan District, marking a significant advancement in the district’s development of the low-altitude economy.

“The introduction of drone services not only reduces operating costs for medical institutions, but also enhances transportation and medical treatment efficiency,” said Xie Xuejun, CEO of Shenzhen Sky Vtol Co. Ltd.

As a crucial medical treatment center for trauma and critically ill patients in the western area of Shenzhen, Nanshan Hospital annually consumes around 26,600 units of blood, equivalent to 5.32 million milliliters, ranking fifth among medical institutions citywide.

In addition to scheduled blood deliveries from the blood center, the hospital also relies on emergency deliveries. In the previous year alone, personnel were dispatched over 240 times to fetch blood from the blood center.
