Travel peak

BETWEEN Saturday, the Lantern Festival, and today, Shenzhen railway stations are expecting 300,000 passenger trips per day, marking a new peak in travel following the Spring Festival holiday.

Shenzhen North Railway Station is expected to handle 200,000 passenger trips daily. From Feb. 10 to Friday, the city’s railway system facilitated a total of 7.22 million passenger trips, including 2.68 million departures and 4.54 million arrivals.

Rapid response

BRUNO SCHUYTEN, a Belgian expat, commended Shenzhen’s firefighters for their swift reaction to an incident near Jingshan Villa in Shekou, Nanshan District.

The fire, which broke out around 10:40 p.m. Wednesday at an electricity relay station, caused a temporary power outage in nearby apartments. “It was quite crazy when it happened,” Schuyten said when describing the fire, which was accompanied by a loud noise and building tremors. “I’m really happy to be in Shenzhen because that reaction time is amazing,” he added.

Schuyten told Shenzhen Daily that upon spotting the fire, he and his friend immediately contacted emergency services. Firefighters arrived promptly after the call and managed to extinguish the fire within 20 minutes.

Watch returned

A CHEF working with the logistics service center of Shenzhen News Group discovered a watch worth a million yuan (US$140,700) on his way to work and promptly returned it to the owner.

The chef, surnamed Luo, stumbled upon the watch in the grass along Tenglong Road while on the way to work in Longhua District on Feb. 18. He picked it up and hastened to his workplace. Upon closer inspection of the watch, one of his colleagues identified it as a Patek Philippe valued at over 1 million yuan. Luo immediately notified the police about his discovery. Subsequently, police officers reunited the watch with its owner, surnamed Wang.

Wang, a businessman, had previously reported the watch as missing to the police. The watch was precious to Wang not only because of the price, but also because it was a marriage gift from his wife.
