LIN JIAN, a fellow of the European Academy of Sciences and chair professor at the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech), was awarded the 2024 Axford Medal recently for his contributions to the disciplines of ocean and earth sciences and seismology.

In a March 15 announcement, the Asia Oceania Geosciences Society (AOGS) named Lin as the recipient of its highest honor.

Lin joined SUSTech’s Department of Ocean Science and Engineering in 2020. He has produced groundbreaking research that has earned him top honors. Lin’s work was featured in the Top 10 Advancements in Ocean Science and Technology in China list in 2019, and he also won the first prize in the Guangdong Natural Science Awards in 2020.

He also received the grand prize of the 2021 Ocean Science and Technology Awards and gained a spot in China’s Top 10 Scientific and Technological Progress Awards in Marine and Lake Sciences in 2023.

The Axford Medal, created in honor of space physicist William Ian Axford in 2010, is AOGS’s most distinguished award. It is awarded to one individual each year in recognition of exceptional earth sciences research.

Founded in 2003, AOGS is an important geoscientific academic organization for the Asian and Oceanian region similar to the American Geophysical Union and the European Geosciences Union.
