THE recent departure of a Malaysia World Cargo Airlines Boeing 737-800 all-cargo aircraft from Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport  to Kuching, Malaysia marked the addition of the second new international cargo route to the airport this year.

With this new route, the Shenzhen airport now boasts a total of 60 domestic and international cargo routes. Kuching, the capital of Sarawak, is the largest city in East Malaysia.

The flight operates three times per week with a capacity of 60 tons, primarily transporting e-commerce goods, general trade items, and express parcels.

So far, the airport’s cargo routes, with over 100 freight flights a week, connect to nine cities in five Southeast Asian countries.

Earlier this month, the Shenzhen airport also increased the frequency of flights for international cargo routes to Istanbul, Sydney, Sao Paulo, and Doha.

To meet the demand of cross-border e-commerce, a total of nine international cargo routes have either opened or increased flight frequency this year.

In the first quarter of this year, the Shenzhen airport’s cargo throughput increased by 21.3% year on year, with cross-border e-commerce air cargo volume doubling.

The airport now serves 60 domestic and international cargo route destinations, covering major global air cargo hubs such as Los Angeles, Chicago, Frankfurt, Paris, London, Liege, and Budapest.

Customs data show that Shenzhen’s cross-border e-commerce imports and exports exceeded 110 billion yuan (US$15 billion) in the first quarter, with a growth rate exceeding 95% year on year.

In recent years, products from Shenzhen enterprises, such as Huawei smartphones, DJI drones, Insta360 panoramic cameras, and Shokz earphones, have gained global recognition through cross-border e-commerce.
