AS the sweltering summer days begin to descend upon us, there’s nothing quite as refreshing as seeking solace amidst greenery and cascading waterfalls. Fortunately for Shenzhen residents, the city boasts its own local gems where one can find an escape from the heat without traveling far.

Big waterfall in Maluan Mountain

Nestled within the park, about a three-kilometer hike from the north entrance, lies a magnificent waterfall.

Formed by the natural descent of water from high above, the waterfall forms a mesmerizing white curtain. Surrounded by lush greenery, the air carries a fresh scent, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in nature. The rocky terrain near the waterfall offers an ideal spot to dip one’s toes in the cool waters.

The mountain exudes a rugged beauty in its landscape, with intricately shaped rocks and a refreshing mist that make it a perfect summer retreat. Moreover, it serves as an ideal location for photography enthusiasts, with the waterfall presenting various picturesque angles.

The elderly and young children should exercise caution when visiting this waterfall, as the steep ascent may pose a challenge for them.

Biling waterfall cluster in Maluan Mountain

For those seeking a more leisurely experience, the Biling waterfall cluster in Maluan Mountain is a go-to destination. Accessible through the northwest entrance of the park, this cluster boasts the most extensive, voluminous, and diverse waterfalls in Shenzhen.

Cascading down the valley in layers, these waterfalls resemble delicate ribbons hanging amidst the mountains or curtains flowing gracefully downward. The largest waterfall in the cluster features a staggering drop of 15 meters, creating quite a spectacle.

One of the highlights of the Biling waterfall cluster is the “stacked waterfalls,” where multiple tiers of waterfalls cascade down a broad slope, resembling cascading curtains. This area is ideal for family outings, with opportunities for children to frolic in the water and explore the scenic mountain trails.

Tiger Gorge waterfall cluster in Wutong Mountain

As the highest peak in Shenzhen, Wutong Mountain spans across Luohu, Yantian and Longgang districts and harbors a hidden gem: the Tiger Gorge waterfall cluster. Accessible from the Shatoujiao Station on Metro Line 8, a short walk along Yunshen Road leads to the entrance of the gorge.

The closest waterfall to the Metro station offers visitors an impressive welcome, with mountain springs cascading down like a silver dragon, creating a mesmerizing sight. Deeper into the gorge, visitors will encounter the grand Tiger Gorge waterfall cluster, a majestic cascade reminiscent of a celestial ribbon descending from the heavens.

The trail through Tiger Gorge offers glimpses of pristine streams, lush forests, and stunning waterfalls along the way. Whether admiring the smaller cascades or the main waterfall, visitors are treated to a symphony of nature’s beauty where water and mist intertwine in a dance of splendor.

Yangtai Mountain waterfall cluster

Known as the highest peak of western Shenzhen, Yangtai Mountain is renowned for its natural beauty. Its secluded valleys and the clear, blue lakes below offer breathtaking views.

Here, there are more than 10 waterfalls, with white streams hanging from the lofty mountain, splashing water droplets, swirling mist, and an extraordinary momentum.

To hike up Yangtai Mountain from the east side, you can start from the edge of the Laiwu Mountain Reservoir and follow a small stream descending from the mountain. After about one kilometer, the sound of the stream grows louder, breaking the mountain’s tranquility. Between two small peaks, a waterfall rushes down, about five to six meters wide, dropping from a height of more than 10 meters into a deep pool below.

Following the stream formed by these waterfalls, you can see more than 10 waterfalls of various sizes along the way, surrounded by peaceful and secluded scenery.

Abundant wild plants create a cool and shady environment. Legend has it that atop Yangtai Mountain lies a “Dragon Pool,” where rain can be prayed for during droughts. From the summit of Yangtai Mountain, you can enjoy the beautiful skyline of Bao’an District.

Tips:

1. Avoid hiking on rainy days or immediately after heavy rain to prevent slipping and falling.

2. There are many mosquitoes in the mountains, so remember to bring mosquito repellent.

3. Wear lightweight, non-slip shoes.

4. If you’re concerned about getting splashed by water, consider bringing an umbrella or a raincoat.
