WITH a diverse range of activities and promotions, Shenzhen is set to become a vibrant tourist destination this May Day holiday, which will run from Wednesday to Sunday.

Zhang Feimeng, director-general of the city’s commerce bureau, announced at a press conference yesterday that Shenzhen will continue its consumption festival activities during the upcoming May Day holiday.

The commerce bureau is actively organizing various departments and enterprises to carry out a series of promotional activities to boost spending, focusing on various new consumption patterns including cultural, business and tourism activities, digital consumption, and green consumption, Zhang said.

This May Day holiday, Shenzhen will witness the launch of a series of exciting events including the Fourth Amid Mountains and Seas Festival, the German-Sino Spring Market, and a grand coffee festival at One Avenue shopping mall in Futian District.

Ding Zhongyuan, deputy director-general of the city’s culture, media, tourism, and sports bureau, said the city will promote various cultural, tourism, sports, and leisure activities to further unleash the potential of holiday tourism consumption and create a pleasant environment for domestic and foreign tourists.

The highly anticipated Xiaomeisha Resort will open for trial operation on May Day this year. In addition, the 29th Volvo China Open, the country’s premier golf tournament, is set to unfold from May 2 to 5 at the Hidden Grace Golf Club in Shenzhen.

Shenzhen’s consumer market has seen notable progress in scale and quality, thanks to the city’s efforts in policy support, creating consumer brand clusters, organizing various promotional activities, optimizing cross-border consumption, and enhancing the integrated development of online and in-person consumption, according to Zhang.

Official data show that in the first quarter of this year, the total retail sales of social consumer goods in Shenzhen reached 246.38 billion yuan (US$34 billion), with growth of about 20% in the sales of new energy vehicles and stationery and over 10% in the sales of household appliances.
