SHENZHEN will see a peak in the number of vehicles leaving the city for the May Day holiday starting from 2 p.m. today, according to a Shenzhen Municipal Transport Bureau report based on historical data.

The peak is anticipated to last until midnight. The report indicates that tomorrow, the first day of the holiday, heavy traffic is expected on expressways between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Major Metro stations such as Shenzhen North, Gangxia North, Buji, and Futian stations are forecasted to experience heavy passenger flows tomorrow.

During the holiday, stations near the city’s major tourist destinations, such as Dameisha, Xiaomeisha, Shenzhen Bay Park, and the Window of the World theme park, will see a surge in ridership. To accommodate the heightened demand, Shenzhen Metro will extend service by 1-1.5 hours today, tomorrow, and Sunday on all lines. On Saturday, Line 5 and Line 6 will extend service by one hour, and Line 4 will extend service by 1.5 hours.

Border checkpoints with Hong Kong, such as the Futian, Huanggang, Shenzhen Bay, and Liantang checkpoints, are also expected to experience a peak in two-way travel of border-crossing travelers tomorrow, Saturday, and Sunday, the last day of the holiday. The daily average of border-crossing travelers is projected to reach 770,000.

The transport bureau has arranged shuttle buses linking checkpoints with local business centers in Futian, Bao’an, and Nanshan districts to provide convenient transfers for inbound travelers from Hong Kong.
