It’s time to watch fireflies in Xichong
    2024-05-17  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

VISITORS can admire glow worms at Xichong International Dark Sky Community in Dapeng New Area as the community enters its ideal season for observing fireflies.

While strolling along the riverside greenways in Xichong, visitors can watch these little ethereal beings flitting across the sky. The most commonly-seen firefly species in Xichong is asymmetricata circumdata, also known as motschulsky, which are active from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. between May and July.

The chances of spotting fireflies will increase if visitors wait near grassy areas or in the forests, which are the fireflies’ preferred locations. Recommended spots include the river between Xinwu Village (新屋村) and Yashan Village (芽山村), the river close to the third entrance of Xichong Beach (西涌沙滩三号口), as well as the grasslands and riverside near Xigong Village (西贡村), Getian Village (格田村), and Xiyangwei Village (西洋尾村)

Visitors are advised to wear long trousers, long sleeves, and high-top shoes to prevent insect bites and encounters with poisonous snakes. It is also recommended that they refrain from using mosquito repellent and insecticides to preserve the natural environment for these glow worms.

Additionally, individuals are advised to check the weather forecast before embarking on their visit to make sure of clear skies. It is not recommended to visit during a full moon night as the excessive light may dim the glow of the fireflies.

Xichong International Dark Night Community was officially recognized by the International Dark-Sky Association in May 2023, making it China’s first and Asia’s second international dark night community.

In addition to observing fireflies, visitors can enjoy various activities such as playing on the beach, strolling along the seaside promenades and participating in sea-themed entertainment events. During meal times, families and friends can savor the region’s special delicacies, which include steamed red shrimp and fried rice with sea urchins.
