血脉觉醒
    2024-05-23  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

Meaning:

Literally translated as “awakening of one’s blood,” this term originates from Chinese fantasy novels, illustrating a phenomenon where one’s inherent potential, dormant until then, suddenly becomes manifest, transforming the person into a more powerful being. Chinese netizens now playfully use it to describe situations where, upon reaching a certain age, they unexpectedly adopt a hobby or practice they once observed or even disdained in their parents or an older generation. This could include embracing traditional Chinese culture, practicing rituals at temples, tending to potted plants on their balconies, or purchasing gold accessories.

Example:

A: 你最近怎么很少去健身房?

Nǐ zuìjìn zěnme hěnshǎo qù jiànshēnfáng?

Why haven’t you been hitting the gym as frequently lately?

B: 我现在每天早起去公园学太极拳。

Wǒ xiànzài měitiān zǎoqǐ qù gōngyuán xué tàijíquán。

I’ve been practicing tai chi in the park every morning now.

A: 血脉觉醒了!

Xuèmài juéxǐng le!

Seems like you’ve picked up an “old-age hobby!”
