He Xiangning’s paintings on display in Malaysia
    2024-05-30  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

IN commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Malaysia, “The Exhibition of He Xiangning’s Art and Documentation (Penang Tour)” is being held at Kwong Wah Yit Poh in Penang, Malaysia, through June 8.

The exhibition showcases Chinese master He Xiangning’s paintings and historic photos, offering a comprehensive insight into her artistry and life.

At the exhibition opening May 26, Cheng Bin, deputy director of He Xiangning Art Museum, highlighted Southeast Asia as a significant region for He’s overseas endeavors. It was noted that in the autumn of 1929, He transported over 300 paintings by herself and other artists to Southeast Asia for exhibitions, lectures, and charitable activities in support of Zhongkai Agricultural and Industrial School. This endeavor remains a cherished memory for the overseas Chinese community in Southeast Asia.

A native of Nanhai in the city of Foshan in central Guangdong, He (1878-1972) was born into a wealthy family in Hong Kong. She married Liao Zhongkai in 1897 and accompanied him to Japan in 1903, where Liao pursued studies in political science. During her time in Tokyo, He studied landscape and flower painting, becoming one of the earliest Chinese students to study in Japan.

The couple’s encounter with the Chinese revolutionary figure Sun Yat-sen in 1903 led them to dedicate themselves to China’s revolution and the advancement of women’s rights. Following the establishment of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, He moved to Beijing, assumed several prominent positions, and continued her work until 1958.

Lee Hin Chan, general manager of Kwong Wah Yit Poh Press Bhd, said that the newspaper was founded in 1910 by Sun, who shared connections with He and Liao. Lee emphasized the special significance of hosting the exhibition at the newspaper, especially in light of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties between China and Malaysia. The exhibition aims to honor this enduring relationship and deepen public appreciation for Chinese art while fostering cultural connections between the two nations.

Wong Hon Wai, Penang State EXCO for Tourism & Creative Economy, regarded the exhibition as a tribute to He’s artistic legacy and noted that it provides the Penang people with a deeper understanding of He’s spirit and her role in fostering friendship between the Chinese and Southeast Asian people.
