‘Monkey Kingdom’ welcomes 10 baby macaques
    2024-05-31  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

THE Guangdong Neilingding Futian National Nature Reserve has announced the birth of 10 new baby macaques since May, which boosted the population of the wild macaque family on Neilingding Island, Shenzhen Special Zone Daily reported.

Island patrol team members were thrilled to observe and document these new arrivals. Despite their tiny and delicate appearance, the baby monkeys are lively and curious, clinging to their mothers and thriving in the nurturing environment.

Among the new arrivals is a baby born to the alpha female, who is regarded as “royalty” within the group. While the patrol team has not yet determined its gender due to the monkeys maintaining a safe distance from humans, the infant has already become a favorite among observers, drawing significant attention whenever it appears.

Researchers attribute the thriving macaque population to favorable breeding conditions. The macaques’ mating season typically occurs from November to December, with a birth peak from April to June. The warm and humid climate during this period is ideal for the monkeys, which allows the mother macaques to give birth and nurture their young.

However, the growth of the macaque family does not come without challenges. In their isolated natural environment, the macaques must stay alert to predators, such as birds of prey and pythons, which pose a threat to the vulnerable infants.

Macaques are classified as a nationally protected species in China. Neilingding Island, with an area of 554 hectares, is Shenzhen’s largest and best-preserved island. It is dedicated to protecting the macaques and their habitat. Currently, the island is home to approximately 23 macaque groups with a total of more than 1,200 individuals, earning it the nickname of “The Monkey Kingdom.” (SD News)
