HAINAN Airlines Flight HU789 departed from Shenzhen on Thursday, marking the launch of direct flights to Vienna, the capital of Austria.

The 11-hour-and-45-minute flight operates twice a week, with departures from Shenzhen at 2:10 a.m. every Wednesday and Saturday and arrivals in Vienna at 7:55 a.m.(local time). The return flight, lasting 10 hours and 55 minutes, departs from Vienna at 11:05 a.m. and arrives in Shenzhen at 4 a.m. the following day.

With this new addition, Hainan Airlines now operates nine international routes from Shenzhen, connecting the city with destinations including Vancouver, Paris, Rome, Milan, Brussels, Auckland, Tel Aviv, and Cairo.

Shenzhen signed a memorandum of understanding with Vienna on May 24 to establish friendly exchange relations with the capital of Austria, which is widely regarded as the classical music capital of the world.

Since the beginning of this year, international passenger traffic has surged at Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport thanks to favorable visa-free policies. As of Wednesday, more than 2 million international passengers had passed through the airport — double the number from the same period last year.

Data show that 980,000 of these passengers, or 49%, were inbound travelers. Of these, around 200,000, or 20% of the total, benefited from visa-free policies, a 2.5-fold increase compared to the same period last year. Most of these travelers were from Malaysia, South Korea, Vietnam, and Singapore.

With the new direct flight to Vienna, Shenzhen’s total number of international routes has reached 40.
