Container throughput at SZ Port hits 11.6M TEUs

SHIPPING container throughput at Shenzhen Port reached 11.6 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in the first five months of the year, a year-on-year increase of 14.6%, signaling robust momentum in foreign trade, data from Shenzhen Customs showed Tuesday.

At Yantian Port, the eastern area of Shenzhen Port, a customer-designed forty-foot container for the export of vehicles was packed with four brand-new cars. The design, tailored for car manufacturers, not only reduces transportation costs but also streamlines customs clearance times.

“Due to surging exports of new energy vehicles, such as the [BYD] Seagull and Song Plus models, to the American market and the increasing demand from BRICS countries like Brazil, roll-on/roll-off shipping vessel capacity cannot meet the demand. This has necessitated the use of container shipping as an auxiliary export method. We have upgraded the shipment capacity from three cars in one container to four cars in one container to improve export capabilities,” said Liu Feng, a customs affairs manager at BYD.

To meet shipment schedules, Shenzhen Customs has introduced measures such as customs declarations in advance and instant inspections to ensure that vehicles can be loaded for shipment within two hours. These measures have greatly improved efficiency and reduced costs in logistics, according to Liu.
