THIRTEEN students from Shenzhen have advanced to the finals of the 2024 Alibaba Global Mathematics Competition.
Among these finalists, eight are from the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech), one represents The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, and another is from the Harbin Institute of Technology, Shenzhen.
The remaining three finalists are high school students from Shenzhen Middle School and the Shenzhen Experimental Education Group Middle School Department.
Gao Qiyang, from SUSTech, is the city’s top performer, ranking 34th in the qualifying round of the competition.
One standout participant of the competition is Jiang Ping, a 17-year-old student who astounded millions of people around the world by securing 12th place in the preliminary round.
Jiang, a fashion design student at Lianshui Secondary Vocational School in Huai’an, eastern China’s Jiangsu Province, taught herself advanced mathematics for about two years. Earning an impressive score of 93 out of 120 points, her exceptional performance secured her a spot in the finals.
The upcoming finals, scheduled for this Saturday, will include topics such as algebra and number theory, geometry and topology, analysis and differential equations, combinatorics and probability, and applied and computational mathematics. A total of 802 students made it to the finals.
Prizes for winners of the finals include five gold awards, 10 silver awards, 20 bronze awards, and 50 honorable mentions.
The top five winners will each receive a bonus prize of US$30,000, according to the competition’s official website. The bonus prizes for the silver and bronze award winners are US$15,000 and US$8,000 per person, respectively.
First held in 2018, the annual Alibaba math competition welcomes math enthusiasts from around the world, irrespective of their age or background.
This year, the competition expanded its scope to include AI contestants, but none managed to enter the finals. |
