APPROXIMATELY 2,700 students and their parents eagerly visited the main campus of the Shenzhen University of Advanced Technology in Guangming District during its second Open Day event Sunday.

The event was held to provide an opportunity for attendees to gain a deeper understanding of this new institution.

The university, previously under construction as part of the Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, has made a commitment to ensure that its first group of students have job opportunities when they graduate. This September, the university will welcome its first group of undergraduate students.

The university offers six disciplines, including computer science and technology, material science and engineering, neuroscience, biological technology, medicine, and biomedical engineering.

Fan Jianping, director of the university preparation office, said that one of the outstanding features of the university is its ability to nurture students through an interdisciplinary approach.

During its first year, the university plans to admit 120 students who have taken the National College Entrance Examination, known as the gaokao, in Guangdong, specifically in the field of computer science and technology. After completing a year of fundamental studies, students will have the opportunity to choose from six different disciplines. As they progress to their junior year, students will be able to specialize in either academic research, engineering, or entrepreneurship.

During the Open Day event, students and their parents were provided with detailed information regarding the characteristics of each discipline, available courses, faculty members, and the enrollment process. Additionally, they had the opportunity to tour the university’s state-of-the-art laboratories, facilities, and dormitories.

Qian Zhenfei, deputy director of the university’s student enrollment department, said that since this is the first year of undergraduate enrollment, there is no past admissions data available for reference. The university urges students who rank within the top 18,000 in the physics category of the Guangdong gaokao exam to consider applying.

In another development, specialized trains promoting scientific knowledge are operating on Metro Line 6 and Line 4. The trains will operate until July 18.
