DESIGN projects created by students from the School of Design at the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) are currently being showcased at Nanshan Zhiyuan (Intelligent Park) in Nanshan District until Sept. 21.

The School of Design End of Year Show features graduation projects from 17 undergraduate students and three postgraduate students, along with 33 undergraduate and postgraduate class projects. Each project is focused on addressing a specific challenge or difficulty we might encounter in our daily lives.

One innovative creation on display is GumPuzzle, an innovative portable to-go drink companion that uses recycled expired gum bases as raw materials, turning them into a range of portable to-go drink accessories that are both environmentally friendly and practical. The GumPuzzle series includes a practical bag to easily carry drinks, a cup holder for hot beverages, and an insulation pad to protect surfaces from liquids and heat.

Another project at the exhibition reimagines the traditional plucking instrument kalimba as an electronic musical instrument called Calina. The project was inspired by the fact that more and more people are choosing to live slowly, enjoy creative self-expression, and share homemade content online.

This design combines the traditional kalimba with the functionality of a game controller, making it portable, easy to learn, and quiet for noise-sensitive environments by allowing users to connect earphones.

Additionally, there is a project dedicated to providing enhanced care for individuals with Alzheimer’s disease. MEMO is a customized sound recording device crafted from materials like wood and silver sourced from the user’s hometown, such as the Douglas fir wood originating from Lushan, Jiangxi Province and Beijing.

Users can personalize their MEMO device by engraving their names and using it to record and replay significant sounds. MEMO aims to offer emotional support and a sense of familiarity to Alzheimer’s patients by recalling nostalgic memories through the power of sound.

These design projects highlight the creativity and innovation fostered by the students at SUSTech’s School of Design.
