Berlin Philharmonic musicians to grace SZ concert hall
    2024-07-05  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

ON this Saturday and next Tuesday, two teams of Berlin Philharmonic musicians will grace Shenzhen Concert Hall to bring the romantic works of French and Belgian composers and a cross-over music feast.

Viola, flute, and harp trio

On Saturday evening, Mei Diyang, principal viola at the Berlin Philharmonic, Emmanuel Pahud, the orchestra’s principal flutist, and its principal harpist Marie-Pierre Langlamet will perform a concert featuring the works of Jean-Philippe Rameau, Henry Vieuxtemps, Claude Debussy, Jacques Ibert, Camille Saint-Saëns, and Maurice Ravel. The program, arranged in chronological order, reflects the shifts in style as French music progressed from Baroque to Romantic and Impressionist eras.

Mei, a graduate of the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing and the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich, won several international competitions, including the first prize at the 2018 ARD International Music Competition.

He will perform solo Vieuxtemps’ “Capriccio for Viola Solo in C Minor, Op. 55,” a piece paying homage to Paganini. This charming piece for the viola is interesting with a sort of nonchalant virtuosity employed to add layers to a simple melody.

French-Swiss flute player Pahud, a versatile musician adept in genres spanning baroque, jazz, contemporary, classical, orchestral, and chamber music, will perform solo Debussy’s “Syrinx, L. 129.” Debussy originally wrote this famous solo in 1913 as incidental music to the uncompleted play “Psyché” by Gabriel Mourey. The work’s name refers to the myth of the amorous pursuit of the nymph Syrinx by the god Pan.

French harpist Langlamet, a multiple award winner and graduate of the Curtis Institute, will perform solo Rameau’s “Suite in E Minor, RCT 2: No. 5,” also known as “The Call of Birds.”

The trio will also collaborate on Ibert’s “Two Interludes,” admired for its colorful, technically polished, and witty neoclassical style, Debussy’s “Sonata for Flute, Viola, and Harp,” and Ravel’s “Sonatine” arranged by Carlos Salzedo.

Audience members will also hear Ravel’s famous “Pavane for a Dead Princess” on viola and harp, among others.

Time: 8 p.m., July 6

Tickets: 180-580 yuan

12 Cellists

On Tuesday evening, the 12 Cellists of the Berlin Philharmonic, a dreamy ensemble featuring cellists of the prestigious orchestra, will perform French music and American pieces as passionate and entertaining as they are profound.

The program will include Jean Francaix’s “Morning Music,” Vincent Scotto’s “Under the Bridges of Paris,” “La Vie en Rose” by the legendary Edith Piaf, and “Swing on Dvořák,” an original piece composed by Stephan Koncz, a member of the ensemble.

The latter half of the concert will present such beloved pieces as Duke Ellington’s “Caravan,” Elvis Presley’s ballad “Love Me Tender,” Piazzolla’s “Fuga y Misterio” and “Adios Nonino,” and the soundtrack from the movie “Catch Me If You Can” by John Williams.

Whether they are playing the classics, jazz, tango, or avant-garde, the musicians promise to fascinate listeners with the wide range of unique and intoxicating timbres that these 12 cellos can produce. Their mixture of seriousness and humor, of depth and lightness, appeals to audiences of all ages.
