Public benefit concerts for July
    2024-07-08  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

IN collaboration with the Leisure and Cultural Services Department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, the Shenzhen Concert Hall is presenting three public benefit concerts this month featuring musicians and ensembles from the SAR.

On July 14, Hong Kong-born organist Anne Lam and American tuba player Paul Luxenberg, the principal tuba player of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, will perform solo and as a duo, presenting excerpts from multiple Bach cantatas. They will also perform his works such as the “Prelude and Fugue in D Major, BWV 532,” and “Organ Concerto in G Major, BWV 592.”

Luxenberg, a graduate of The Juilliard School, has performed with the New York and Los Angeles Philharmonic orchestras. Lam, who received her doctorate from the Eastman School of Music, New York, is adept at both performance and teaching. She won second prize in the 6th Miami International Organ Competition in 2012.

On July 21, the Hong Kong Children’s Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of their principal conductor Jeff Leung, will perform Bach’s “Fugue in G Minor,” various concertos, and suites. Founded in 1996 by Hong Kong music educator Yip Wai-hong, this orchestra consists of music students aged 7-18 and has toured numerous countries and regions. Leung will also enlighten the audience with his insights into the pieces and the stories behind the music.

On July 28, members of the Hong Kong Harmonica Association will present Bach’s “Sarabande, Minuet, and Rondo,” “Allemande,” and “Air on the G String.” During the performance, the musicians will introduce different types of harmonicas and provide the audience with a unique experience of Bach’s music played on this simple and intuitive instrument.

Meanwhile, the free Afternoon Music Time series will feature a concert of piano four hands and guitar performances.
