A CEREMONY was held at Guangming Science City on Monday to inaugurate a research institute founded by the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech).

During the ceremony, Yang Xueming, a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and dean of the SUSTech Guangming Advanced Research Institute, said that the institute aims to foster a vibrant community that unites scientists, entrepreneurs, investors, and innovators by leveraging the combined strength of SUSTech and Guangming District.

Yang emphasized the collaborative nature of the institute, which was envisioned to contribute to the development of Guangming Science City and the broader goal of establishing a comprehensive national scientific center in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

SUSTech has been at the forefront of establishing large scientific facilities at Guangming Science City since its launch, including one for material genomics, and is focused on conducting pioneering research in information technology, new materials, life sciences, and technology advancements, Yang said.

The new institute is designed to serve as a strategic hub for original industrial innovation and contribute to the advancement of new scientific and economic development initiatives. It focuses on national strategic needs and is composed of eight major scientific research centers, including an advanced light source center, an innovative materials center, a life sciences center, and a research and development center for new drugs.
