LOOKING for performances to feast your eyes in summer? The Guangming Culture and Art Center has a good option. This August, The Imperial Ice Stars, an acclaimed troupe for theater on ice, will bring to the theater “Cinderella on Ice” and “Peter Pan on Ice,” two shows on ice based on two classic fairy tales.

With dazzling stage art, innovative storytelling and breathtaking ice skating by former award-winning skaters, these performances on a frozen theater stage are sure to bring a fresh experience to Shenzhen audiences.

The Imperial Ice Stars is a company specializing in theatrical productions on ice. Its troupe consists of 26 skaters who have won a total of more than 250 medals at high-level skating competitions, including the Olympic Games, the World Figure Skating Championships, and the European Figure Skating Championships.

The troupe has staged over 3,000 shows in more than 29 countries and regions across five continents, attracting more than 20 million viewers and garnering positive reviews from renowned media outlets.

“Cinderella on Ice,” set in a small town in Siberia, unfolds as a humble chorus dancer unexpectedly rises to the role of principal dancer. Her graceful dance, however, has helped her win not only the applause of the audiences, but also the heart of the mayor’s son, a charming single nobleman.

Despite the constant interference from her wicked stepmother and her stepsisters’ attempts to win the affection of the mayor’s son, true love eventually triumphs over evil thanks to her loving father and a gypsy witch.

The show, conceptualized and choreographed by renowned ice theater director Tony Mercer in collaboration with three outstanding ice skating coaches and with opulent costumes designed by Albina Gabueva, head designer at Moscow’s famed Stanislavsky Music Theater, has won wide acclaim since its debut in 2008.

“Peter Pan on Ice” follows the fairy tale by British author James Matthew Barrie. Intrigued by Peter Pan, a magical boy who can fly, the three children of the Darling family learn to fly and one night they fly away from their home for “Neverland.” A series of adventures ensue.

The show’s enchanting plot, vivid stage effects, coupled with the skaters, including the young skaters’ highly-skilled skating, make it a perfect choice for family entertainment.
