AS temperatures soared in Shenzhen throughout July, snake activity surged, leading to an increase in snake bite incidents. Data from the Shenzhen 120 dispatch center reveal that 14 citizens called for emergency assistance due to snake bites since the beginning of July. On July 25, three residents in Longgang District were rushed to hospitals by ambulance after being bitten by snakes. An estimated 250,000 to 280,000 snake bite incidents are recorded annually across China, primarily affecting individuals aged 50 and above. The peak period for snake bites extends from April to October, with a high between July and September. The Shenzhen Emergency Medical Center has issued guidelines on what to do in the event of a snake bite. The most crucial step is to seek immediate medical attention. Before reaching the hospital, rinse the wound with clean water to reduce venom residue, monitor the victim’s consciousness and breathing, and document the snake’s appearance, preferably with a photo, to assist doctors in identifying the species for precise treatment, according to the guideline.
