The influence of the environment
    2024-08-06  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

Page Chen, G10, RDF International School

Recently, I had difficulty focusing on my studies while in my bedroom. During my search for reasons and solutions, I discovered a factor that is often underestimated by many – the environment. The environment we are in, including our surroundings and the individuals we interact with, actually plays a much more significant role than we typically realize.

My bedroom is sparsely furnished, featuring a large bed and a small desk where I usually do my homework and work on the computer. The room is decorated with items that I find charming and comforting to have around.

Despite this, when I found it difficult to study in this familiar space, I decided to move to the library. The library was filled with books, softly illuminated by warm orange lighting, and basked in natural sunlight during the day. As expected, my productivity and concentration levels experienced a notable boost in the library environment.

The setting in which we learn, whether it be at school or at home, significantly influences our effectiveness and ability to concentrate. While our homes are typically designed to offer comfort and visual appeal that cater to our emotional needs, they may not always provide conductive environments for efficient studying or work.

According to the social learning theory, observing classmates engrossed in their studies at school can inspire us to emulate their behavior and focus on our own academic tasks.

The advent of the internet and technological advancements has made it possible to work or study from home. While some people propose that working or studying from home is convenient, saves the time spent on commuting, and facilitates a work-life balance, I hold a different view. Working in a conductive environment remains essential for being productive. Identifying, creating, and utilizing an environment tailored to our specific needs is essential for achieving our goals.
