A 3-YEAR-OLD girl diagnosed with diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) has recovered thanks to the collaborative efforts of the pediatrics and endocrinology departments at Pingshan Maternal and Child Health Hospital, according to Shenzhen Special Zone Daily. The patient, identified as Xiao Ai, began experiencing nasal obstruction and developed a cough shortly after arriving in Shenzhen. Initially diagnosed with bronchitis at a nearby hospital and given medicine, her condition soon deteriorated. She also exhibited symptoms like lethargy, nausea, and vomiting. Concerned about Xiao Ai’s worsening state, her parents took her to Pingshan Maternal and Child Health Hospital. During her evaluation, Xiao Ai’s blood sugar levels were found to be six times higher than what is considered normal. Recognizing her severe symptoms as DKA, the attending physician quickly diagnosed her with type 1 diabetes. Wen Lihua, director of the pediatrics department, emphasized that DKA is the most common hyperglycemic emergency seen in diabetic patients. DKA is also a leading cause of death for children with type 1 diabetes, especially for those who are not diagnosed and treated promptly. While hospitalized, Xiao Ai received a joint treatment plan from endocrinologists and diabetes care specialists. The team focused on maintaining her electrolyte balance and regulating her blood sugar levels. With the help of Dong Guoqing, a pediatric endocrinologist from Shenzhen Maternity & Child Healthcare Hospital, Xiao Ai’s condition stabilized, and her blood sugar is now within normal limits. Pediatricians have recommend regular medical examinations moving forward. Cases of childhood diabetes have been on the rise annually, according to the Daily report. (Peng Cheng, Wang Jingli) |
