THIS Sunday afternoon, indulge in classic melodies reinterpreted by a young yet promising orchestra as the Unicorn Chamber Orchestra join forces with violinist An Haojia to present a concert featuring classical music and modern film scores under the baton of Liu Yu.

The concert program will include well-known excerpts from operas by master composers, such as Bizet’s “Votre Toast” from “Carmen,” Mozart’s “The Magic Flute Overture” from “The Magic Flute,” Rossini’s “William Tell: Overture” from “William Tell,” and Massenet’s “Meditation de Thais” from “Thais.”

In addition to opera excerpts, the program will feature several classical pieces that even listeners who are not classical music fans will find familiar. These include Elgar’s “Salut d’Amore,” Brahms’ “Hungarian Dance No. 5,” Shostakovich’s “The Second Waltz,” Pachelbel’s “Canon in D Major,” Monti’s “Csárdás,” Beethoven’s “Turkish March,” and the English folk song “Greensleeves.”

Complementing the classical tunes will be themes from beloved films such as “The Legend of 1900,” “Life Is Beautiful,” and “The Tango Lesson.”

Founded in 2016, the Unicorn Chamber Orchestra is comprised of exceptional graduates from top music schools, including the Yale School of Music, the Royal Academy of Music, and the Central Conservatory of Music. With over 200 concerts to its credit, the orchestra has extensive experience collaborating with renowned musicians and conductors, both nationally and internationally. Its notable collaborators include pianists Yuan Fang and Cheng Wai, violinist Xue Suli, tenors Warren Mok and Shi Yijie, composer He Zhanhao, and conductor Christopher Russell.

An, who has an education background from the U.K. and Australia, is the youngest lecturer in violin at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. As a violinist, he has been invited to perform as a soloist in collaboration with major orchestras in Australia.

Liu Yu, an associate professor of conducting at the School of Music, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, is active on concert stages nationwide. He obtained his master’s degree in conducting from the Berlin University of the Arts and his doctorate in conducting from the University of Music Karlsruhe.

Liu has served as the resident conductor of the Orchestra of Changchun Film Studio, the conductor of the Shenyang Symphony Orchestra, and a guest conductor of the Xi’an Symphony Orchestra. He is currently the music director and principal director of the Shenzhen City Philharmonic.
