Through 123 paintings, photos, videos, sculptures, and personal memorabilia, the exhibition brings to life the transformations in people’s lives and the cityscape over the years. Upon stepping into the exhibition hall, visitors can hear the resounding blast that signifies the groundbreaking construction of the Shekou Industrial Zone in 1979, a pivotal moment in Shenzhen’s history in the early days of reform and opening up. Opposite this video is the audio recording of New China’s first land auction in Shenzhen in 1987, accompanied by a striking oil painting capturing that momentous event. Notably placed amid these exhibits are Pan He’s sculptures — a pioneering ox and an old tree root — symbolizing the pioneering, innovative, dedicated, and progressive spirit of Shenzhen people, ready to break free from old, conservative thoughts. The exhibition showcases items such as share certificates from Shenzhen’s early stocks, a painting capturing the Chinese mainland’s first McDonald’s in Shenzhen’s Dongmen, and a series of contrasting urban photographs illustrating the city’s remarkable evolution from a humble fishing village to a dynamic metropolis with global influence over the past four decades. Vibrant oil paintings depict the zeal and aspirations of the youth who contributed to the construction of the special economic zone, complemented by old certificates once held by migrant workers, symbolizing their growth alongside the city that embraces and nurtures all dream-seekers. Technological advancements are also on exhibit, including Ubitech robots, DJI drones, and BYD SkyShuttle and SkyRail train models, alongside stylish posters, showcasing the boundless innovation that Shenzhen continues to drive forward.
