Epic dance drama to grace Bay Opera
    2024-09-18  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

“PINGTAN Impression,” a dance drama choreographed and directed by renowned Chinese dancer Yang Liping, will be staged at Bay Opera of Shenzhen in Bao’an District.

Yang is famed for appearing in the performance art show “Dynamic Yunnan,” which has toured all across China, selling out many large venues.

“Pingtan Impression” shines a spotlight on Pingtan, located off the coast of Fujian Province and also the closest place on the mainland to Taiwan.

Weaving together different strands from the city’s traditional folk culture, such as snippets of local dialect, legends, puppet and marionette shows, dragon-lion dances, and recreations of the local ritual of paying homage to Matsu, goddesses of the sea, the show depicts the island city’s beauty and originality.

It tells of a legendary love story that happens between Junshanwang, the white dragon prince and Pingtan’s ancestor, and Pingtanlan, the daughter of sea, revolving around such plots as how they fell in love with each other and fight against foreign invaders.

The show lasts 120 minutes nonstop, and children under 1 meter tall will not be admitted.
