UNDER the baton of pianist and conductor Jimmy Chiang, the Vienna Boys Choir will perform at the Shenzhen Concert Hall this Saturday. They will offer a vibrant musical experience by presenting classical works, which include renowned opera arias, art songs, religious music, film scores, and musical numbers. Musical and film songs take center stage in their performance, featuring pieces like “There’s No Business Like Show Business” from the musical “Annie Get Your Gun” and Marc Shaiman’s “Hail, Holy Queen” from the movie “Sister Act,” both known for their stirring melodies. The program also includes folk tunes such as the Bulgarian folk song “Birds Are Singing”; another piece traditionally sung on New Year’s Eve in Ukraine; the Serbian dance tune “Niska Hot Spring”; the Chinese folk song “Xiao He Tang Shui” (“Flowing Creek”) from Yunnan Province; and “The Song of the Yangtze River.” Additionally, there is a whimsical piece titled “Túrot Eszig a Cigány” composed by Hungarian musician Zoltán Kodály. The choir will also perform “On Top of the East Mountain,” an aria from Puccini’s opera “Turandot” inspired by the Chinese folk piece “Flower Tune.” Western art songs are also featured, including Schubert’s “Trout,” Brahms’ “Lullaby,” and Bruckner’s “Virga Jesse Foruit,” alongside dance tunes like “Les Patineurs,” “The Joy of Singing,” and “The Blue Danube.” With their rich musical heritage, the Vienna Boys Choir promises to lead audiences on a musical journey spanning time and the distinct cultural landscapes of the East and West. Born in Hong Kong, educated in the United States, and currently based in Vienna, Chiang was the first prize winner of the 2007 “Lovro von Matacic” international conducting competition in Zagreb, Croatia.
