Come ride the ‘capsule train’
    2024-11-15  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

WHEN it comes to the hottest seaside spots in Shenzhen these days, Tianshi Bay in Dapeng New Area is certainly on top of the list. Beyond its glassy sea and sandy beaches, it boasts a hugely popular capsule train that offers stunning ocean views, and a charming grove where delightful sika deer can be spotted.

The Ocean View Capsule Train has attracted countless visitors. When the start button is pressed, the train slides down the slope along the coast, making a rhythmic clanging sound. The sight of the white carriages against the backdrop of the blue ocean is truly picturesque from a distance.

While some people liken it to the Shenzhen version of the Busan capsule train, others humorously refer to it as “Howl’s Moving Security Booth,” inspired by Japanese Director Hayao Miyazaki’s “Howl’s Moving Castle.”

Although it’s somewhat pricey to ride the train, which costs 10 yuan (US$1.40) per person per a three-minute journey, it’s still incredibly popular. According to an on-site staff member, lines for the capsule train often extend 100 meters on weekends.

The train operates from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., with 10 a.m. being the best time for capturing beautiful photos of the capsule train.

A three-minute ride on the capsule train may not seem to justify the lengthy journey from downtown Shenzhen to Tianshi Bay in Dapeng, but the breathtaking views of the blue sea make the trip worthwhile, especially now that Shenzhen has entered its most pleasant season of the year, with high skies and light clouds. Visitors can enjoy a beautiful scenery that lives up to its name.

The eastern side of the Tianshi Bay features a beach of fine, soft sand, while the western part has more pebbles.

Compared to the well-known Dameisha and Xiaomeisha beaches in Yantian District, Tianshi Bay offers a more tranquil setting while still providing equally stunning ocean views. The newly opened beach is equipped with shark nets, lifeguards and free shower facilities, allowing visitors to enjoy a safe swim in the waters.

Currently, no reservations or tickets are needed to visit the beach, making it a great choice for those seeking a quiet beach to enjoy the sea views.

While relaxing on the expansive lawn at Tianshi Bay, visitors are likely to encounter two spotted deer moving gracefully across the grass. They are adorable with big bright eyes.

If you have extra time, consider strolling along Jinsha Road to Xiaojin Bay Beach for an even broader view of the breathtaking ocean scenery. On clear days, you might even catch a glimpse of Hong Kong’s Sai Kung in the distance.

How to get there

It is recommended to drive — follow your GPS to Yunhai Tianshi Bay on Jinsha Road. Parking costs 40 yuan per hour, and is capped at 80 yuan per day.

Alternatively, you can take bus No. E11 to Dapeng Zhongxin Stop, and transfer to bus No. M583 to Yunhai Mansion Stop.

Dining

Dining options at Tianshi Bay are currently limited, as the facilities have not yet fully established. There’s a buffet available at Yunhai Hotel. Or you can head to nearby Jinsha Bay which features a bar and food street.
