CHRISTMAS Eve is a time to celebrate with loved ones. If you haven’t made plans yet for this special day, consider attending Lisa Ono’s concert at Shenzhen Poly Theater. The music genre known as “bossa nova,” which translates to “new trend” in English, originated in Brazil in 1964. Following the enormous success of the song “The Girl From Ipanema,” bossa nova captured the United States and then spread from there to the entire world. People have been drawn to it because of the music’s delicate melodies, rich harmonies, and smooth syncopation. To mark the 35th anniversary of her debut album, Ono is on a concert tour in Asia. Attendees can expect to enjoy familiar English and Chinese pop songs alongside classic bossa nova tunes in Portuguese, and chansons in French. Born in São Paulo, Brazil, to Japanese parents in 1962 and relocating to Japan at 10, Ono began singing and playing the guitar at 15. Her recording debut was in 1989 with the album “Catupiry.” With her effortless voice complemented by rhythmic guitar playing, she built a successful career and contributed to the popularity of bossa nova in Japan. Her 1999 album “Dream” sold over 200,000 copies in the country. A four-time recipient of the Japan Gold Disc Award in the Jazz category, Ono was honored with the National Order of Rio Branco by the Brazilian government in 2013.
