SZ: where tech and culture converge
    2024-12-10  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

Kirill Tezichev

I first arrived in Shenzhen last September. With a little more than 40 years of history, the city is a tech hub with unique cultural charm.

I discovered that Shenzhen offers a wealth of cultural activities that enrich daily life. I myself have participated in a Chinese poem recitation and a public speaking contest.

Chinese traditions, such as the Spring Festival and the Mid-Autumn Festival, are observed in the city with the same fervor as they have been for thousands of years.

The technological landscape of Shenzhen is equally impressive. When I first visited Nanshan District, I was reminded of New York City, with its towering skyscrapers and the headquarters of some of the world’s leading tech companies. The prevalence of electric cars, easily identified by their distinctive green-colored license plates, highlights Shenzhen’s commitment to environmental sustainability alongside its technological prowess.

As a graduate student specializing in low carbon and green economics, I have developed a keen interest in sustainable development. I am continually amazed by the innovations that define Shenzhen’s daily life. One standout feature is the drone delivery service available in the university town, where orders can be placed and delivered to designated collection points by drones.

Contrary to many modern cities around the world, which often feel like concrete jungles devoid of nature, Shenzhen stands out with its impressive balance of urban development and green spaces. Shenzhen has one of the largest green areas in its downtown among Chinese cities, providing a refreshing respite from the fast-paced urban environment.

This integration of nature and architecture not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the city but also contributes to a healthier living environment for its residents.

My experiences in sustainable development have allowed me to appreciate such a balance. The lush parks, tree-lined streets, and green rooftops in Shenzhen exemplify how urban planning can prioritize ecological sustainability while embracing technological advancements.

The city’s commitment to green initiatives — such as electric public transportation and smart city technologies — reflects a forward-thinking approach that aligns with my research focus.

Shenzhen stands as a testament to the possibility of harmonizing the old with the new, making it a city that not only embraces the future but also honors its past.
