Felix Xu Unlike previous holidays filled with video games and schoolwork, my recent summer vacation was packed with amazing experiences. To polish my English skills, I kicked off the holidays with a visit to the library where I picked up some English comic books. After immersing myself in reading for about three weeks, I noticed a significant improvement in my language proficiency. Next, my teacher assigned me to a program where I volunteered in a rural area, teaching local children. I was initially nervous when faced with the young students as teaching was a new experience for me. However, I gathered my composure and gave it my best shot. Throughout the five days spent in the village, I worked tirelessly to make my lessons engaging and enjoyable for the children. To instill a love for science, I conducted experiments in the classroom to demonstrate scientific principles. One experiment involved a ping pong ball to illustrate the concept of air pressure on Earth. Despite a minor mishap when the ball fell to the ground due to an operational error, I quickly improvised and explained the role gravity played to the students. I explained to them that once air entered the bottle, eliminating the vacuum space, the ping pong ball, which was previously supported by air pressure, fell to the ground due to gravity. In an effort to encourage active participation in class, I prepared snacks for students who asked good questions, hoping to foster genuine learning experiences. This experience enlightened me on the challenges of teaching and showed me the children’s earnest desire to improve their lives through education. I made a silent pledge to work diligently in school and aspire to contribute meaningfully to society in the future, hoping to be able to help children in rural areas. Upon returning, I dedicated myself to school projects and readied for the upcoming semester while also enjoying time with friends. This summer holiday, I felt a deep sense of fulfillment and purpose. |
