Experience festive atmosphere, tradition of Chinese New Year in Shenzhen
    2025-01-20  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

AS the Chinese Lunar New Year approaches, the festive atmosphere  in Shenzhen grows stronger. Residents are gearing up to welcome the arrival of the Year of the Snake, set to begin on Jan. 29 this year.

With less than two weeks until Chinese New Year’s Eve, markets citywide are bustling with shoppers. Whether you are buying flower decorations, preparing the reunion dinner on Chinese New Year’s Eve, or strolling through the vibrant markets, Shenzhen offers a colorful array of places to celebrate, inviting everyone to discover the city’s unique charm during the holiday season.

New year goods markets

Major supermarkets and markets across Shenzhen are already brimming with festive products related to the Year of the Snake. From lively zodiac snake charms to exquisite new year paintings, red envelopes, calendars, and various creatively designed items, there is a dazzling variety to choose from. The lively atmosphere in supermarkets is particularly inviting, with citizens eagerly purchasing their favorite decorations to enhance the festive spirit at home. Bring your family along to choose decorations that capture the essence of the new year and immerse yourselves in the festive ambiance.

Red apparel to brighten festival

During the holiday season, Shenzhen’s shopping malls become especially vibrant, with red clothing taking the center stage. From sweaters adorned with zodiac snake patterns to scarves embroidered with the character “Fu” (meaning fortune), the selection of new year-themed clothing is dazzling. Go visit a mall to find matching festive outfits for you and your family, or treat yourself to a red dress that not only adds to the celebratory atmosphere but also creates lasting memories.

Reunion dinner

The reunion dinner on Chinese New Year’s Eve is an essential tradition for every Chinese family. In Shenzhen, reservations for Chinese New Year’s Eve dinners at major restaurants are booming; many establishments even offer “chef at home” services, allowing you to enjoy a high-quality reunion dinner in the comfort of your own home. Gathering around the dining table with family, savoring delicious festive dishes, and soaking in the new year atmosphere is sure to make an unforgettable Spring Festival experience.

New year flowers

In Shenzhen’s flower markets, sales of new year flowers peak during this festive season. The vibrant blooms and decorations attract a large number of citizens eager to shop. It has been a long tradition in Guangdong Province that people visit the Spring Festival flower markets during the Chinese New Year celebrations.

This year, Shenzhen’s Spring Festival flower markets will be available in many districts, selling fresh flowers, snacks, creative cultural products, Spring Festival couplets, new year gifts, pet supplies, and other themed offerings. Additionally, collaborations with popular eateries and various entertaining activities will be included.

Tourism and sightseeing in SZ

Shenzhen’s major theme parks, shopping centers, and other attractions are also preparing a variety of cultural and entertainment activities for the upcoming Spring Festival. Consider taking your family to explore major attractions in Shenzhen, such as Shenzhen Bay Park, the Happy Valley theme park, and the Shenzhen Museum, and experience the unique charm and cultural richness of Shenzhen. With the implementation of the transit visa-free policy, an increasing number of international tourists are enthusiastic about visiting China. (Wei Jie)
