
MANY millennials in Chinese cities grew up with the warm memory of Japanese filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki’s delicately beautiful and wildly imaginative animation films. During the Chinese New Year’s holiday, a concert by the Unicorn Chamber Orchestra is inviting fans to relive the thrill of those memories by featuring the exciting film music by Joe Hisaishi. Fans will hear the familiar scores from such films as “Castle in the Sky,” “Spirited Away,” “Kiki’s Delivery Service,” “Howl’s Moving Castle,” “Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea,” “My Neighbor Totoro,” and “Princess Mononoke,” among others. Founded in 2016, the Unicorn Chamber Orchestra comprises of exceptional graduates from top music schools, including the Yale School of Music, the Royal Academy of Music, and the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing. With over 200 concerts to its credit, the orchestra has extensive experience collaborating with renowned musicians and conductors, both nationally and internationally. The upcoming concert will feature violinists An Haojia and Li Jingyi, violist Qiu Yini, cellist Hao Cong and pianist Cui Rongrong. An, who has an education background from the U.K. and Australia, is the youngest lecturer in violin at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. As a violinist, he has been invited to perform as a soloist in collaboration with major orchestras in Australia. The other musicians, all graduates from top conservatories, have appeared at live concerts home and abroad.
