Pet shops thrive as Spring Festival nears
    2025-01-24  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

AS the Lunar New Year approaches, pet shops in Shenzhen are experiencing a surge in business, with many pet owners rushing to give their furry friends a fresh look for the new year.

On Tuesday evening at the Ruipeng Pet Hospital branch in Futian District, pet groomers were busy bathing, trimming, and blow-drying a cat, even though it was past closing time. The hospital staff noted a significant increase in grooming appointments, with daily reservations fully booked in the lead-up to the holiday, as reported by Shenzhen Evening News.

With the rising demand for pet salon services and increased labor costs during the Spring Festival period, many businesses have adjusted their prices to maintain service quality. Ruipeng Pet Hospital, for instance, has added a 20-yuan (US$2.74) surcharge for bathing services and a 50-yuan surcharge for styling services from Jan. 14 to Feb. 12. Other service fees remain unchanged.

A resident surnamed Ma, who lives in Futian’s Meilin area, said, “I spent about 340 yuan to bathe two cats, which is more expensive than usual. It costs more than my own haircut.”

Some pet shops have adopted dynamic pricing strategies. For example, the Paituoluo pet shop in Longgang District has increased its pet grooming service fees by 30% from Jan. 17 to 22, 50% from Jan. 23 to 28, and 80% from Lunar New Year’s Eve to Feb. 4, the last day of the Spring Festival holiday.

A pet shop owner in Nanshan District told the Evening News that business volume typically increases by 50% in the 10 days before Lunar New Year, with the week leading up to the holiday being as busy as an entire regular month.

According to the report, despite the price adjustments, most pet owners are understanding. “It’s only once a year, and the additional cost isn’t much. We get haircuts and new clothes for the New Year, so why not our pets?” said a pet owner surnamed Chen.

The pet grooming process, which includes bathing, combing, and blow-drying, takes nearly three hours per pet, with prices varying based on size and coat length.
