In late January, Chinese people, amidst their year-long hustle and bustle, paused their work routines to prepare for the Spring Festival.

The Spring Festival unfolds each year in an enchanting and distinctive manner.

It embodies not only the hopes and aspirations for a fresh start but also serves as a moment for family reunions. During this festive period, people across China journey back to their hometowns for a gathering with loved ones.

The jubilation of the occasion resonates throughout the nation. Streets and alleys in cities are adorned with festive decorations like red lanterns, Chinese knots, and auspicious couplets written on red paper. Shopping centers and markets bustle with activity as families select New Year delicacies such as rice cakes, dumplings, snacks, and fruits. Amidst beaming smiles, well-wishes are exchanged, and children and service staff receive lucky money.

In rural landscapes, the Spring Festival is observed with equal fervor. Villagers take respite from agricultural duties to tidy their homes, affix couplets on doors, and hang up lanterns. Many households cull chickens, lambs, or pigs and prepare a lavish feast.

On Chinese New Year’s Eve, families gather around the dinner table, reminiscing about the past year’s experiences and sharing hopes for the year ahead.

After the meal, fireworks light up the sky, and many households will watch together the live broadcast of a Spring Festival gala on TV.

Throughout the 15-day Spring Festival holiday, extending until the Lantern Festival, people visit relatives and friends, extending warm greetings, and children happily receive lucky money from family members, relatives, and even neighbors.

Unfortunately, a select few, like couriers, utility workers, and those in the service industry, are unable to partake in the holiday festivities due to work commitments.

From afar, they try to stay connected with their loved ones through thoughtful gifts and video chats.

The Spring Festival, a cultural tradition embraced by all Chinese, keeps strengthening the bonds we share with family, friends, and even strangers.
