“MULAN,” an artistic, choreographed re-telling of a quintessentially Chinese tale, will meet local audiences in March. The folklore heroine who has been a household name in China will appear in a dance drama in her namesake, after inspiring numerous creations, including the Disney’s 1998 animated film of the same name, and a live-action adaptation in 2020. Unlike the traditional legend of Hua Mulan, which celebrates her warrior spirit, this production also spotlights her strength in her pursuit of self-identity, love and peace through compelling dance numbers and exquisite music. The production, an ingenious blend of dance, martial arts and theatre elements with exquisite modern stage technology, has won the Lotus Award, China’s highest award for dance. Directed by Han Zhen and Zhou Liya, two renowned Chinese contemporary choreographers, the dance drama recounts in 21 scenes how young and beautiful Mulan embarks on a warrior’s journey in the Northern Wei Dynasty (386-534). From disguising herself as a man to take her father’s place in the army, fulfilling her missions, pursuing love, and ultimately returning to peace and freedom, Mulan embarks on a journey of self-discovery and empowerment. Circle is a frequently adopted symbol for the drama, suggesting the theme of reunion and the heroine’s seeking of perfection. The revolving circular stage breaks the limitations of time and space to create more possibilities for fluid storytelling. The music is a contemporary arrangement of traditional Chinese folk tunes, orchestrated for a variety of Chinese and Western instruments. Together with the heart-rending interpretation by the dancers, the production interprets a traditional Chinese story with innovative aesthetics appealing to the modern audience. Hao Ruoqi, an actress with the China National Opera and Dance Drama Theater and a gold award winner of the Lotus Award, will perform as Mulan. At 1.75 meters tall and with sharp features, Hao is a perfect choice for headlining the dance drama, according to Han. The show is produced by Ningbo Performance & Arts Group.
