
LIU XIAO, one of China’s best violinists today, will delight fans on Women’s Day with beloved classics from the violin repertoire. Liu will showcase a selection of captivating pieces including Chen Gang’s enchanting “The Sun Shines on Tashkurgan,” the beloved “The Butterfly Lovers,” Monti’s lively “Csárdás,” Paganini’s melodious “Andante Cantabile in D,” Massenet’s poignant “Meditation,” Dvorak’s vibrant “Slavonic Dances in E Minor, op. 72: No. 2,” and Sarasate’s dazzling and exotic showpiece “Gypsy Airs,” known for its rich embellishments of trills, grace notes, and harmonics. Accompanying Liu on piano will be the young talent Yu Boyang. Liu’s musical journey includes eight years of study under the guidance of Chinese maestro Lin Yaoji at the Central Conservatory of Music, followed by mentorship from the renowned violinist Midori, a protege of Dorothy Delay. Having been a part of the esteemed Heifetz Studio, Liu now serves as a professor of violin at his alma mater. With a performance history alongside over 40 orchestras worldwide and five solo albums covering Chinese compositions and classical Western works, Liu has captured the hearts of audiences with pieces like the cherished “Butterfly Lovers” and Paganini’s “24 Caprices.” Liu plays on a 1774 Gagliano violin known as “Oliveira,” previously owned by Elmar Oliveira, the first and only American violinist to claim the gold medal at Moscow’s prestigious Tchaikovsky Competition in 1978. Born in 1992, Yu graduated with honors from a master’s program in piano performance at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing. He received the first prize at the Allegro Vivo International Music Festival in Austria in 2012 and has showcased his exceptional skills and nuanced interpretations of his repertoire in concerts across China and the United States.
