SHENZHEN’S acclaimed dance drama “Wing Chun” is poised to make history as the first Chinese original dance drama to be staged at two of Russia’s most prestigious theaters, a move that underscores the deepening cultural ties between China and Russia as 2025 is the Year of Culture between the two countries.

This innovative production, deeply rooted in Lingnan culture and born out of the creative hub of Shenzhen, is set to grace the iconic stages of Moscow’s Bolshoi Theater and the world-renowned Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg.

The performances are scheduled from April 25 to 26 at the Bolshoi Theater and from April 30 to May 1 at Mariinsky II (New Theater), marking a significant milestone for the Chinese dance drama on the international stage.

The Bolshoi Theater, a beacon of Russian ballet since its establishment in 1776, stands not only as a symbol of Russian culture but also as a global treasure in the realm of ballet. Having undergone several reconstructions, it has witnessed the evolution of Russian ballet from a follower of European trends to a global leader in the art form.

Meanwhile, the Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg, one of Russia’s largest musical theaters, has played a pivotal role in the development of Russian dance and opera art. It is a cornerstone of Russian art and a part of the world’s cultural heritage, reflecting the glorious history of Russian music and drama.

The upcoming performances of “Wing Chun” at these two iconic venues are expected to be a visual and cultural feast and a significant highlight in the cultural exchanges between China and Russia, further strengthening the bonds of friendship and mutual cultural appreciation between the two nations.

Since its domestic premiere at the end of 2022, “Wing Chun” has already left an indelible mark on the international stage with performances in 47 cities and 57 theaters across multiple countries, racking up an impressive 242 shows.

In August 2024, the acclaimed production made its way to London, the U.K., where it took the stage at the historic Sadler’s Wells Theater.

For nine consecutive days, “Wing Chun” delivered 12 mesmerizing shows, drawing in audiences with an average attendance rate of 80% at the London theater. This remarkable run set a new record for the longest commercial performance duration and the most performances of any Chinese dance drama in Europe.

The success of “Wing Chun” in London was soon followed by another triumph in Paris, France. In October 2024, the dance drama took center stage at the Palais des Congrès for four performances over three days. The response was overwhelming, with an average attendance rate of 97%, cementing the production’s reputation as a must-see cultural phenomenon.
