THE annual Bao’an Intangible Cultural Heritage Show and Mazu worship event kicked off yesterday morning in Shajing, Bao’an District, marking a vibrant celebration of local culture. The event, held at the historical Tianhou Temple, featured a dazzling array of performances including a Mazu procession, local intangible cultural heritage folk shows, dragon and lion dances, and traditional folk songs and dances. It was truly a feast for the senses, drawing a large crowd eager to experience the rich cultural traditions of the region. Shajing, known for its oyster farming that dates back to the Song Dynasty (960-1279), has long been home to a deep-rooted devotion to Mazu, the revered sea goddess. Over centuries, this connection has evolved into a profound local tradition of honoring Mazu through worship and festivities. These practices, passed down through generations, continue to play a central role in the community’s cultural identity. This year’s event saw the participation of 18 teams in the Mazu procession, each offering their homage to the goddess. (Tang Li) |
